Is It Empowerment Or Exploitation?

Welcome everyone to the first proper AWD episode in six (!) whole months, where we’re seated in the same room drinking from the same bottle of wine and ready to tell you all about our drunken emails to our idols and a very exciting celebrity sighting. Then it’s onto the two biggest digital events of the week: the Emmys and the A-list Zoom call featuring Brad and Jen, an incredible Shia LaBeouf and a hot Henry Goulding (who Grace may or may not have once flirted with). On Friday, the iconic feminist Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away age 87. We discuss why her legacy is so important, why we all need to add Marty to our vision board, and why it’s so scary that she passed away during a Trump presidency. Last but certainly not least, Emily Ratajkowski penned a moving essay for New York Magazine, which quickly went viral, detailing the night she alleges she was sexually assaulted by a photographer and the nuances of owning her own image and power as a model and public figure. We discuss why it’s okay to want to protect Em Rata from disgusting men and support her as a woman, but also take a slight issue with what she dubs feminism. What’s the line between exploitation and empowerment? And just because you may feel empowered by something, does that make it a feminist act? Listen now for all this and more!
