The film October Sky which was released in 1999 stars Jake Gyllenhaal who portrays Homer Hickam, a coal miner’s son who was inspired by the first Sputnik launch to take up rocketry against his father’s wishes. It is based on the true story of Homer Hickam who has written many books on his life.
