Cyprus Eyes Energy Independence: Plans to Export Natural Gas to EuropeCyprus is set to become a significant energy supplier for Europe, with plans to export natural gas as early as 2027. The Cypriot president, Nikos Christodoulides, announced that the first gas exports would likely come from the Cronos deposit, operated by a joint venture of Italian company Eni and French firm TotalEnergies. The Cronos deposit is promising due to its proximity to existing infrastructure that transports gas from Egypts large Zohr deposit. The Cypriot Energy Minister, George Papanastasiou, described the 2027 target as optimistic but achievable. Additionally, there are plans for another Cypriot deposit called Aphrodite, which involves placing a floating processing plant directly over the reservoir to convert the gas into a form that can be sent straight to consumers in Egypt. Cyprus is actively working to align its energy interests with powerful states, aiming to become an alternative energy corridor for Europe. The Daily News Now! — Every city. Every story. AI-powered.
