While planning future episodes of the Go Pitch Yourself podcast, I realized that I’d never done an episode about following up on your pitches. Now, I know that people can struggle with feeling like they’re pestering the host or being annoying. But you have to remember that your expertise and unique perspective offer value to the host and their audience. That’s why you made the pitch in the first place, right? In the coming months, we’re going to be expanding out from podcasts to pitching for visibility opportunities in a variety of areas. But the idea of a well-thought-out follow-up plan and script applies to any medium. The important thing is getting your message out there. You’ve already identified the audience that you can help, and following up in a respectful way can be a key part of ensuring that you stand out, and increase the number of “yeses” that you get. Topics covered include: How to stop worrying about being annoying and have faith in the value of what you have to offer the audience Understanding that the purpose of the pitch isn’t to pester anyone, it’s to make sure that they don’t miss out on what you have to offer Responses to some of our pitches and follow-ups - including one of our worst responses ever! How, when, and how often you should be following up - and why, if you don’t have a schedule, you shouldn’t even send the pitch Why having a schedule and templates will make your follow-up activities more effective and efficient Different scenarios for following up after an event, a discovery call, and even when someone has already said “yes” to you!
