Welcome to episode 1002 in which host Polly Hammond interviews Marta Mendonça & Cristina Crava of the Porto Protocol Foundation, this week on Uncorked. In this episode, we are joined by the leadership team of the Porto Protocol, Marta Mendonca and Cristina Crava. As one of the oldest organizations combatting climate issues affecting wine, The Porto Protocol has taken a radical approach to collaboration, competition and certification. Today, we’ll talk about optimism in the face of crisis, sharing solutions for the greater good, and how The Porto Protocol convinced over a dozen wine producers and providers to share their story on video. Let’s get into it! The Porto Protocol Foundation is an international non-profit institution, founded by Taylor Fladgate Port, with hundreds of other members commitTed to make a greater contribution to mitigate climate change. More about today’s guests: Marta Mendonça: Marta has built most of her career in Marketing & Sales, having worked with various brands, countries, industries and companies. In the past few years, before joining Porto Protocol, Marta was working with her own brand and consultancy project, through which she took sustainability and climate advocacy to schools, events and companies, promoting awareness and encouraging change. Marta holds a degree in International Relations, a Post-Graduation in Marketing and a Master in Corporate Social Responsibility. Cristina Crava: Cristina is an Environmental Engineer, a Safety and Health at Work Advanced Technician and holds a Post-Graduation in Management. She has built most of her career in an academic setting, at Católica University, in Porto, first as a teacher and as the scientific coordinator for the Environmental Quality Specialized Course and later on, as Advanced Training Manager. Cristina always worked in environmental consultancy across various industries, alongside her educational path, and still finds the time to manage, along with her family, their Vinho Verde project. She splits her time between Barcelona, Auckland, and Napa, consulting, writing, and speaking about the trends that impact today’s wine businesses. She’s an advisor to New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, host of Uncorked with the Italian Wine Podcast, cohost of the Real Business of Wine with Robert Joseph, and, occasionally, a knitter. Polly is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she earned degrees in International Relations and French. Those studies led to a deep and abiding love affair with behavioral Economics, and her wine work is based on insights into all the crazy and irrational reasons consumers engage with brands. With over 20 years experience in growing successful companies, Polly knows first hand the challenges faced by independent businesses. She approaches each client experience with empathy and understanding for what it takes to adapt and thrive in the real world.
