Episode 28: The Great Train Robbery (1903)

The birth of the American Western, as well as the birth of narrative filmmaking, began with Edwin S. Porter's The Great Train Robbery (1903).  A product of Thomas Edison's production company, it was the first breakthrough film since George Melies' A Trip to the Moon (1902). With a running time of only ten and a half minutes long, multiple versions of The Great Train Robbery can be seen on YouTube and it's also available on DVD.  It is only the second film listed in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.
