Ep.12 Some Hard Truths About Leaving the Police - Stuart McGuire

Stuart McGuire is a former 24/7 response Temporary Police Inspector, who rose through the ranks pretty quickly and like many, loved what he was doing, particularly whilst managing a covert Operational Support Unit, but was becoming increasingly frustrated by the impact of austerity measures on Policing and the lack of career progression, alongside shift work for both him and his wife whilst raising a young family and after a particularly tough year personally, started looking at career options outside of Policing.  He worked on his CV and after being contacted by a former colleague, left to join the Royal Mail as an Operations/General Manager and after making a big impact using the skills and experience gained in the Police service, was moved to a really challenging location where the behaviours and culture were very difficult to manage. Other opportunities began to materialise through his network on LinkedIn and one in particular stood out as a fantastic offer and Stuart took a massive risk and left Royal Mail to help with a start-up and took a business from concept to fruition, stepping well outside of his comfort zone and learning a huge amount of new skills along the way. Another opportunity presented itself but after a period of time working for them as Head of Operations and then Business Development and Marketing, Stuart was made redundant which came as a huge shock to him and his family. He'd been in secure roles throughout his working life and it hit him hard. That's when our paths crossed (via LinkedIn). Stuart decided to set up his own Consultancy and is now working 3 days a week for the NHS and loving what he's doing and the work life balance he has. Towards the end of the interview, Stuart gives some amazing advice relating to really understanding how the private sector works.
