Are you a parent to kids under the age of 5 and learning the balance the act of compassion and positive boundaries? If so, today’s episode is for you. in fact, even if you are not raising little people, this episode could be applicable to you. If you have ever found yourself facing uncomfortable emotions and situations with people or moments, you can benefit from this conversation about setting positive boundaries and learning to self-regulate. Our guest on this episode of The Honest Hour Podcast is occupational therapist and parenting expert Meg Faure. Speaker and author of SEVEN BEST-SELLING BABY CARE BOOKS, Meg Faure is South Africa’s most loved Mom and parenting professional with the actual blueprint to change our parenting journeys. Meg knows the world of the baby as it pertains to the infant’s sleep, feeding, development and play and the challenges of early parenting. Fortunately for us newbie parents with no background in occupational therapy, Meg is here to help us all figure it out too. I had the opportunity to meet Meg in person in early 2019 at the launch of her 7th book “Allergy Sense,” co-authored with Dr Sarah Karabus and Kath Megaw. At the time, my youngest son and I were battling food and environmental allergies, but I was also dealing with facing my own “ghosts in the nursery”. I was uncovering buried childhood trauma that was getting in the way of my own ability to self-regulate, and subsequently emotionally interfering with how I was parenting my own toddler children. In our chat, Meg and I look at the phenomenon of our emotional part of the brain and how it can be regulated with awareness and boundaries, as well as how it is never too late to start applying healthier, more functional parenting principles (for ourselves AND our children). We discussed how every parent has a common goal for their child which is to develop strong and well-adjusted little humans with the strength of character and confidence to develop and cultivate their unique optimal potential. While Meg helps parents functionally guide the development of babies from new-born and beyond, the focus of our chat today was mainly on helping regulate a toddler’s behavior and guide them through positive boundaries and healthy self-regulation. We address supported independence and what healthy screen time and use looks like for the under 5’s, as well as how the global COVID19 pandemic and subsequent shut down of schools has tweaked this regulation a bit. We also look at autonomy in children and how to outline practical situations for positive boundary setting and as well as go from co-regulation to self-regulation for your little ones.
