Inside Politics: Why the Albanese government is now calling for a ceasefire

At the United Nations headquarters in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday, Australia voted in favour of a United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.  The UN vote coincided with a separate development in Australia’s position on Gaza.  Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to issue a statement supporting a pause in the fighting in Gaza and efforts towards a sustainable ceasefire.  Both these moves - the statement and the ceasefire motion - were a break from the position of our powerful allies, the United States and the United Kingdom.
